ppia – application system

The Public Policy and International Affairs Program (PPIA) is an outreach-focused national program that prepares students for advanced degrees & careers in public service. PPIA Fellows attend a intensive seven-week summer program hosted by UC Berkeley, Michigan, Carnegie Mellon, Maryland and Princeton universities. Each year approximately 500 students apply for roughly 100 positions.

The goal this year was an entirely paperless process: students apply & upload supplementary documents, recommenders submit letters for students, directors from each university program review these applications and make admission decisions all using an online system. When the program is complete, instructors submit student evaluations and these evaluations are distributed electronically to members of PPIA’s 35 member university consortium.

It’s the most complex and integrated system we’ve built to-date.

theatrescool

cool-screenTheatresCool is a professional method acting school in Bloomington Normal Illinois. They offer acting classes for all age groups, host performances of award-winning plays and are now using their venue to host live local music and other activities.

TheatresCool approached us looking for a refreshed look for their site and a desire to be able to quickly and easily update event content as well as post news and information about their activities. They were also interested in a design that would equally promote their school, their programs and their event schedule of the venue.

We were able to quickly and affordably install a wordpress blog and host all of their static page content there as well. They can now edit and update all the pages of their site quickly and easily. We customized a theme to match their design requests and refreshed their logo as well. We also centralized the hosting of some various video footage they had of their events to make playback more uniform in their blog posts.

hexive site refresh

hexive-screenEvery September we set aside time to focus on our own business site. It’s good to have regularly scheduled time to take a fresh look at the design and writing on each of the sections of the site. This year we did a complete redesign, simplified some of the page structure, and we are adding a business blog for the first time.

Visitors read websites more like a billboard than a novel. The biggest challenge for us is effectively describe what we do on a quick first impression. What is this company? What do they do? What can they do for us? What are they like? We’re using a few single sentence summaries below our logo to hopefully answer those questions. A web developer’s client portfolio is also very important. We’ve dedicated space in the top-third of the front page to feature some of our favorite long-term clients.

We are also excited about this new weblog space. We plan on using it not only for announcements, but also to post more in-depth descriptions of our clients and the work that we’re doing for them.
